There's a particular flavor of parental dread reserved for the moment you notice a pink shoulder on your kid at the end of a beach day. Sun safety has a reputation for being either an afterthought or a panic — neither of which is useful when you're trying to get a wriggling toddler to hold still for sunscreen. The good news is that the actual rules are short, the science is settled, and the under-6-months version is almost embarrassingly simple: mostly, keep the sunscreen in the bag and keep the baby in the shade.
Here's the calm, practical version — what to do at each age, and why.
Why small skin burns faster
A baby's skin is thinner and produces less melanin than an adult's, which means it burns faster and more deeply from the same amount of sun. And the stakes aren't just a rough evening of a fussy, sunburned baby. Childhood sun exposure is a long game: a few blistering sunburns in childhood meaningfully raise the lifetime risk of skin cancer, including melanoma, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation is cumulative, and it's invisible — by the time skin looks pink, the burn is hours from its peak.
That's the case for building sun habits now, while they're easy to set, rather than relearning them after a bad burn.
Under 6 months: shade and clothing, not sunscreen
This is the part that surprises a lot of new parents. For babies younger than 6 months, the FDA and the AAP both recommend keeping them out of direct sunlight — and they specifically say sunscreen isn't the answer. Young infants are at greater risk of sunscreen side effects (like a rash), and their skin absorbs more, so blanketing them in lotion is the wrong tool.
Instead, the protection is environmental:
- Shade first. A stroller canopy, an umbrella, a tree, the shady side of the street. Keep the baby out of the sun as much as you can, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.
- Cover up. Dress your baby in lightweight, tightly woven clothing — long sleeves and long pants in breathable fabric — plus a wide-brimmed hat that shades the face, neck, and ears. The AAP suggests a brim of about three inches all around.
- Protect the eyes. Baby sunglasses with 99–100% UV protection are worth it when you can keep them on.
What about the unavoidable patch of skin — a face on a walk, the backs of the hands? The AAD says if shade and clothing genuinely aren't enough, it's fine to apply a minimal amount of broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ to those small areas. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are least likely to irritate sensitive skin. This is the exception, not the routine — and your pediatrician is happy to weigh in if you're unsure.
6 months and up: sunscreen joins the kit
Once your baby passes 6 months, sunscreen becomes a regular player alongside (not instead of) shade and clothing. The formula the AAP recommends:
- Broad-spectrum. The label must say "broad-spectrum," which means it screens both UVA (aging, deeper damage) and UVB (burning) rays.
- SPF 30 or higher. The AAD recommends at least SPF 30, which blocks about 97% of UVB rays. Higher SPF blocks marginally more; no sunscreen blocks 100%.
- Water-resistant, since babies sweat, drool, and end up in water.
How to actually use it:
- Apply generously to all exposed skin about 15 minutes before going out, so it has time to bind. Don't forget the easy-to-miss spots: ears, the part in the hair, tops of the feet, the back of the neck.
- Reapply at least every two hours, and immediately after swimming, sweating, or toweling off. "Water-resistant" lasts only 40 or 80 minutes in water — check the label — then needs reapplying.
- Cloudy doesn't mean covered. Up to 80% of UV rays pass through clouds, and UV bounces off water, sand, and pavement. A gray sky is not a sunscreen holiday.
A practical tip for the sunscreen wars: let toddlers "help" smear it on, sing a song, or make it part of the going-out routine. Resistance drops when it's predictable.
The hierarchy that actually matters
If you remember nothing else, remember the order of operations — sunscreen is the last line, not the first:
- Timing and shade. Skip peak hours when you can; seek shade when you can't.
- Clothing and hats. Fabric is the most reliable sunblock there is — it doesn't sweat off or need reapplying. Look for tightly woven clothes or items labeled with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating.
- Sunscreen on whatever skin is left exposed.
This hierarchy is why the under-6-months advice and the older-kid advice aren't really different philosophies — they're the same hierarchy, with sunscreen simply added once it's age-appropriate.
Don't forget the heat
Sun safety and heat safety travel together. Babies overheat faster than adults and can't tell you they're too hot. On hot days, dress them lightly, offer extra fluids (breast milk or formula for babies under 6 months — they don't need water yet), and watch for a flushed face, rapid breathing, or unusual fussiness. Never leave a child in a parked car, even for a minute and even with the windows cracked — interior temperatures climb to dangerous levels astonishingly fast. If your baby seems overheated and isn't cooling down, or has signs of dehydration, call your pediatrician.
When a sunburn happens anyway
Even careful parents get caught out — a hat blows off, two hours becomes three. If your child gets burned: get them out of the sun, give cool (not cold) compresses, push fluids, and soothe with plain moisturizer or aloe. Age-appropriate, weight-based acetaminophen or ibuprofen (ibuprofen only over 6 months) helps with the sting. Don't pop blisters.
Call your pediatrician if:
- Your baby is under 1 year and has any sunburn.
- The burn blisters, covers a large area, or is very painful.
- Your child has a fever, chills, lethargy, headache, or signs of dehydration — these can signal sun poisoning or heat illness and need attention.
The bottom line
Sun safety isn't complicated, and it isn't a reason to keep your kid indoors all summer. Under 6 months: shade and clothing, sunscreen only on the bits you can't cover. From 6 months on: add broad-spectrum SPF 30+, reapply every two hours, and keep the hat and shade in rotation. Build the habit early, make it boring and automatic, and you'll have stacked the odds in your child's favor for decades — without a single ruined afternoon.
